Ring of Kerry Mountains and Lakes

I’m back on the Ring of Kerry equestrian vacation ride, which we filmed for Equitrekking’s Irish Countryside episode. Today we’re riding by the mountains and lakes, high above the main road. Stephanie, our riding guide, is taking Julie and I through this beautiful area of Ireland on strong Irish horses. I’m on Aladdin, who takes on the rocky terrain well. Though Stephanie is now guiding us, everywhere we ride, I’m hearing Aoife’s voice. She was my guide when we filmed for the Equitrekking Irish Countryside episode and told us lots about the area and its history.

Stephanie is a frequent guide on the Ring of Kerry Trail. She’s German. She came to the Ring of Kerry on a vacation and ended up staying and working for Killarney Stables. She’s been doing it for 10 years. Aoife O’Sullivan is another guide. Her father Donie owns the Killarney Stables. They’ve been leading rides for over 20 years.

If you come to Ireland to ride in the spring, you will see a lot of sheep and lambs. The tiny, puffy animals are so cute and reason enough to travel this time of the year. We’re here in early spring, so they are everywhere, dotting the green countryside.

We rode passed by Caragh Lake. The sun peaked out of the clouds briefly and the lake shimmered below us. We continued on up to the Windy Gap, where there are amazing views of the patchwork countryside with its variety of greens and yellow gorse and in the distance, bright blue Dingle Bay and the beaches.
