Kentucky Three-Day Event First Horse Inspection Photo Gallery

All 45 horses in the CCI5*-L passed the First Horse Inspection at the 2022 Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event.

The 2022 Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event officially kicked off today with the First Horse Inspection under sunny skies. All of the 45 horses presented in the CCI5*-L passed the inspection. Two horses, Booli Selmayr’s Millfield Lancando and Alexandra MacLeod’s Newmarket Jack, were initially held, but both passed on re-inspection. Doug Payne’s Quantum Leap was asked to immediately re-jog but was accepted.

“I’m very happy to be happy to be here in the beautiful Kentucky, and I’m very thankful to have a super horse like FischerChipmunk,” said Germany’s three-time Kentucky champion Michael Jung. “And on this weather like today, it’s just to enjoy.”

The dressage phase for the five star will start at 1 p.m. tomorrow with 21 pairs competing, including Phillip Dutton and Sea of Clouds, Doug Payne and Vandiver and Great Britain’s Pippa Funnell and Majas Hope. The remaining horses will compete in the dressage phase on Friday, including three-time Kentucky winner Michael Jung and FischerChipmunk FRH and New Zealand’s Jonelle Price and McClaren.

Below is a photo gallery of some of the horses and riders from the Horse Inspection.

Michael Jung (GER) about Fischerchipmunk: “He’s a really beautiful horse, a lot of quality—super dressage, very good jumping. I think he’s very powerful in the cross country. We just have no experience in the five-star level, so this is our first five star. I think it’s a proper, tough five-star course. It’s a very hilly place. But that’s why we are here, to get more information to build up our partnership together. It will be very interesting Saturday for me.”

Boyd Martin (USA) about Tsetserleg and the cross-country course: “It’s typical Kentucky. It’s very demanding from start to finish. I feel like I’m on a veteran now and he’s capable of jumping all the jumps, so it’s my job to give him a perfect ride. I think if I ride him well, he should jump around well. … But it’s a funny sport, anything can happen. From here on out, you just got to stay calm, and on the day, ride him well.”

Doug Payne (USA) about Quantum Leap: “Quantum is an 11-year-old so he’s just kind of getting here and he’s got a huge amount of potential. So if we put it together, it could be really good. If he gets a little green, then so be it. It is what happens in developing horses.”

Colleen Rutledge (USA) about Covert Rights: “I am so thrilled with how he feels right now. It’s a pleasure to ride him all the time, and right now he just feels amazing.”
