July 8, 2016 – Laura Chapot swept the top two places in the $30,000 Open Jumper Classic Thursday at the I Love New York Horse Show, the second of two weeks comprising the 47th annual Lake Placid Horse Shows, presented by Sea Shore Stables LLC. Chapot won the class on ISHD Dual Star and placed second on Quointreau Un Prince. She also finished 10th on Thornhill Kate.

Eight of 29 entries reached the jump-off by riding without penalty over the 15-jump course designed by Show Jumping Hall of Famer Steve Stephens. Chapot took an early lead in the jump-off on Quointreau Un Prince when she turned in a four-fault ride in 36.113 seconds. No one managed a clean ride over the eight-jump tiebreaker course until Chapot returned on her Irish Sport Horse, ISHD Dual Star. She finished clean in 37.019 and waited to see if the last two entries could catch her.

Both of the last two, Irish Olympic veteran Kevin Babington and Michael Hughes, almost turned the trick but each had the last rail down for four faults. Babington, winner of last Sunday’s $75,000 Devoucoux Grand Prix of Lake Placid, finished in 37.396 seconds on his Irish Sport Horse, Mark Q, good for fourth place, and Hughes finished in 37.366 seconds on Virginia WZ which earned him third.

“I really never considered going for a slow clear,” Chapot said after her win. “Kevin and Michael are two of the fastest riders we have and I knew I’d have to go fast to beat them, Also, I knew that if I did have a rail, a fast four-fault ride still might do the trick.”

Tori Colvin won the $1,500 Adirondack Life 1.35m Jumper Class on Chanel B 2. Colvin won the Power and Speed class over a 22-horse field by going fault-free over both sections of the course and finishing the speed section in the fastest time of 27.726 seconds.

Also, Margie Engle won the $1,200 Lake Placid Lodge 1.30m Jumper Class on Alter Ego, riding clean over both the power and speed sections of the course and turning in the fastest clean ride over the speed section.
