Morgan Ward Wins $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby at Buffalo International Horse Show

Broadway earned the win in the $5,000 Johnson Horse Transportation USHJA National Hunter Derby with Morgan Ward in the irons.

August 13, 2015–New York City may be the home of Broadway theatre, but this weekend it was in Buffalo, New York that a slightly different Broadway stole the spotlight. On Saturday evening at the Buffalo International Horse Show, the 9-year-old Oldenberg gelding, Broadway, earned the win in the $5,000 Johnson Horse Transportation USHJA National Hunter Derby with Morgan Ward in the irons.

The young rider made the trip from her home in Milford, New Jersey to the Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center (BTRC) to be a part of the 69th Annual Buffalo International Horse Show. In addition to her win in the derby, she and Broadway found success in the 3’6″ Junior Hunters, including another Saturday victory, this time in the $1,000 Up the Creek Junior Hunter 3’6″ Classic.

“Broadway is a phenomenal horse. Ever since we got him, he’s been unbelievable,” Ward said previously of gelding owned by her sister Lindsey Ward. “I ride him like a big pony. He’ll leave from wherever for me, which is so nice. He jumps like a freak. He’s just everything.”

Ward’s blue ribbon in the USHJA National Hunter Derby was the first of three large awards presented during the Saturday evening session of competition. Immediately following the derby, it was the children’s and adult jumpers’ turn in the spacious indoor ring at the BTRC for back-to-back classic rounds. In the $2,500 S.A. Comunale NAL Children’s/Adult Jumper Classic, the victory went to Lydia Ulrich and Up Stream, owned by Up the Creek Farm. In the $1,500 S.A. Comunale NAL Low Children’s/Adult Jumpers it was Samantha Majchrzak and her own Sully who claimed the top spot.

Majchrzak’s win in the Classic also secured her spot as the top in the Low Children’s/Adult Jumper division, earning she and Sully the division championship. The reserve championship went to Jessica Sciarra of SBS Farms and her own Caspian.

In the Children’s/Adult Jumpers, the championship was awarded to another rider from SBS Farms, Paige Kouimanis and her mount Lexus, owned by Sweet Oak Farm. Lauren Paddock and Chacca Blue, owned by Gina Calicchio, won the reserve championship.

Prior to the start of the featured evening session, the Buffalo International Horse Show named this year’s Adult Amateur Hunter champions. Earning the championship in the Adult Amateur 36 and Over Hunters were Penelope Ayers and her own Cezanne. In the Adult Amateur 18-35 Hunters, the championship would be one of many this week for young rider Lydia Ulrich. She clinched the win on her 7-year-old Warmblood gelding Sansouci. The reserve champions went to Alexis Mierzwa riding Helen Lenahan’s Me Again in the older division and Dr. Jackie Boyczuk and her own Harley in the younger section.

Other Saturday hunter classic round winners included Lydia Ulrich and Sansouci in the $500 “Shogun” Adult-Amateur Hunter Classic, Amelia Ruth and Ponies & Palms Show Stable’s Spellbound in the $1,000 “Scribbles” Pony Hunter Classic and Alex Troli and the BRTC’s Hey Sailor in the $1,000 Up The Creek Farm Junior Hunter 3’3″ Classic.

Competition at the 69th Annual Buffalo International Horse Show concludes on Sunday with the completion of the junior hunter, pony hunter, children’s pony and children’s hunter divisions, as well as the $500 Johnson Horse Transportation Silver Stirrup Cup.
